Collection details

Mesh fabric is a type of textile that is one of the indispensables of our daily life and stands out with its flexible and comfortable structure. This type of fabric which is obtained by knitting yarns into loops is softer and more flexible than other fabrics so it has a wide usage area especially in the clothing industry. It is preferred in many areas from sportswear to underwear from baby clothes to home textiles.

Fine fabrics made of luxurious yarns such as silk offer both stylish and comfortable use with their shiny and soft textures while creating a fresh feeling in summer thanks to their breathable structures in the form of a net. Fine knits that give the effect of tulle combine elegance and lightness and are frequently preferred especially in evening dresses and underwear designs.

What is a mesh fabric?

Mesh fabric is a flexible and soft textile type created by interlacing yarns in loops. Unlike woven fabrics it adapts to the body thanks to its flexibility and offers freedom of movement. Due to these features it has a wide range of uses from sportswear to underwear from daily dresses to home textiles.

These fabrics which can be produced with different fibres such as cotton, wool, polyester or elastane make the skin comfortable and minimise sweating thanks to their air permeability. While their thin and light structures provide coolness in summer thick and densely woven types are preferred for their ability to keep warm in winter.

How do you sew mesh fabric?

Firstly choosing the right equipment is very important. The needle to be used in the sewing machine must be a specially produced ‘jersey’ or ‘stretch’ needle. These needles prevent damage to the loops by sliding between them instead of piercing the fabric and ensure a smooth stitch. Also stretch stitch settings should be used to maintain elasticity. Zigzag stitch or special stretch stitch settings do not disturb the elasticity of the fabric and prevent the seams from bursting during movement.

As these fabrics are prone to slipping it is necessary to stabilise the fabric before sewing using plenty of pins or clips. A more durable and flexible result can be obtained by using a light zigzag stitch or double needle technique instead of a straight stitch. At the edge finishes an overlocker or zigzag stitch can be used to prevent the fabric from unravelling.

Another point to be considered is to sew without stretching the fabric. Pulling the fabric too much while sewing can cause fluctuations in the seam line and distort the shape of the fabric. To avoid this problem adjusting the pressure force of the presser foot and if possible using a walking foot (Teflon foot) makes things easier. After the sewing is completed the seams should be smoothed with a light iron using steam but high temperatures should not be used because some fabrics can be distorted by heat or lose their elasticity.

Finally using good quality threads when sewing makes a big difference to the durability of the garments. Flexible and durable polyester or nylon threads preserve the natural movement of these fabrics ensuring a long-lasting seam.
